The history of our charter dates back to the year the City of Durango incorporated in 1881. The Chamber of Commerce operated under the guise of several different names through its tenure, yet the entire time adhering to the mission of enhancing community businesses and the overall viability of the local economy.

Our current title, the Durango Chamber of Commerce, was adopted in 1931. However, from 1988 to 2002, the Chamber operated under the name of the Durango Area Chamber and Resort Association (DACRA), and in addition to traditional chamber activities, oversaw tourism development in that period of time. In 2003, tourism development was handed off to the Durango Area Tourism Office.

The Durango Chamber of Commerce is a member based organization that promotes and supports the local business community. With more than 800 members, the Durango Chamber of Commerce acts as a resource of information for its members, the community, and relocation inquirers. It communicates business related issues and advocates on the behalf of its members. The chamber operates networking and educational programs all for the sake of building a stronger community and a greater quality of life.

The Durango Chamber of Commerce is proud to offer a leadership program that helps develop the future of Durango. Leadership La Plata is the leadership skills and broad based community education arm of the Durango Chamber of Commerce. Each Year, 18 diverse, civic minded and active community members from throughout the county are selected to participate in this influential program.
