Information about the Awards

Business of the Year

The Business of the Year Award recognizes dynamic companies that show a commitment to excellence and support of the community. These businesses demonstrate strong financial performance, strategic growth, and innovation in service and management.

Recent recipients include Kroegers Ace Hardware, 1st SouthWest Bank, and Peak Food & Beverage.

Small Business of the Year

The Small Business of the Year Award recognizes a business that has less than 15 full-time, year-round employees, demonstrates innovation, perseverance and outstanding accomplishments in management while operating a growing business.

Past recipients include Southwest Eye Consultants, Star Liquors, and Durango Harley Davidson.

Non-Profit of the Year

The Non-Profit of the Year Award honors outstanding achievement in the nonprofit sector. The organization meets an unfilled need for the betterment of the community and serves with distinction.

Past recipients include the Business Improvement District, Region 9 Economic Development, and the Community Foundation.

Citizen of the Year

The Citizen of the Year is awarded to individuals who have made a noteworthy contribution to our community that is above and beyond their profession or regular responsibilities. Someone who exemplifies putting the community first and making Durango a better place.

Recent recipients include Jack Turner, Clark Craig, and Dr, Joseph Murphy.

Entrepreneur of the Year

The Ed Morlan Entrepreneur of the Year Award celebrates those who see opportunity where others see obstacles, innovators who launch new ventures, transform existing businesses, and lead growth with courage and vision. Past recipients include Jeff & Jennifer Vierling with Tailwind Nutrition, Jessika Buell with Lucky Services/Marketing Concepts Squared, and Monique Digiorgio with Table to Farm Compost.

Bill Mashaw Volunteer of the Year

Volunteer of Year honors an individual who exemplifies the spirit of volunteerism, and community leadership that is above and beyond their normal profession and responsibilities.

Past recipients are Vaughn Morris, Dave Woodruff , Lisa Barrett, and Jeff Givens.

Spirit of Bayfield

Honoring a business or organization that reflects the character of the Pine River Valley through a strong commitment to local families, community partnerships, and long-term resilience.

Spirit of Durango

Selected by the Chamber Diplomats, this award honors businesses that provide a unique, valued, and altruistic contribution to the character and economy of Durango.

Spirit of Ignacio

Recognizing a business or organization that actively strengthens the vitality of Ignacio by creating spaces for community interaction, supporting local schools and nonprofits, and demonstrating a commitment to reinvesting in the community.

Morley Ballantine Women's Leadership

The Morley Ballantine Women’s Leadership Award honors a woman who supports other women, fosters leadership growth, and demonstrates excellence. The recipient makes a lasting impact through mentorship and service, creating meaningful contributions to the community.

This is a time-honored award selected by a committee.

Public Service Impact

Honoring government employees who go above and beyond their official duties to create real, lasting change. These individuals demonstrate exceptional leadership, vision, and a results-driven approach at the local, county, state, or federal level. Their commitment to service strengthens La Plata County, making a tangible difference in the lives of those they serve.

Barbara Conrad Leadership La Plata

Presented to a Leadership La Plata graduate who demonstrates sustained leadership, professional excellence, and a strong commitment to community service. This honor recognizes alumni who exemplify the program’s mission through meaningful civic engagement and lasting contributions that strengthen La Plata County.

Diplomat of the Year

Diplomat of the Year honors a Chamber Diplomat who served the community and the Diplomat program

Young Professional of the Year

YPOD of the Year is selected by members of the YPOD organization.
