Colorado businesses should be closely watching Senate Bill 26-134, the Swipe Fee Relief Act, as it awaits Governor Jared Polis' decision before the June 11 deadline. The bill would prohibit large credit card companies from charging swipe fees on the sales tax portion of transactions. Small businesses should not be paying processing fees on tax dollars they never keep. If signed into law, the measure would provide meaningful relief to local employers. The business community also celebrated the passage of SB26-137, which Governor Polis signed into law on May 14. The measure requires state agencies to review regulations every five years and identify outdated or unnecessary rules that create burdens for employers.
While these are positive developments, challenges remain. According to the Common Sense Institute and the Colorado Chamber, Colorado is the 4th most expensive state in the nation and the 6th most regulated. Policymakers must continue looking for ways to support employers, strengthen local economies, and keep Colorado competitive.
